Steps To Stop Biting Your Nails

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

For us habitual nailbiters this habit isn’t the one to quit easily. It made us feel shame around people who might
notice our fractured nails and bleeding around nails. And the nails have so unpleasant look that we are in big
despair trying to find a solution to this wierd nail biting nightmare.

Here are some steps I collected that will nake you stop or significantly reduce your nail biting habit.

1. Confront your problem. Get a camera and make several pictures of your bitten fingernails. Examine your nails,
and notice their problems.

2. Choose one nail to “protect” at a time.
- You will notice how it grows and how healthy it look in just a few days. Do not bite it. If you feel you need to
bite nail, do it with one of the ‘unprotected’ ones.
- Once you have grown your unbitten nail for a while, start protecting another one. And another.

4. Record your progress in a notebook. Take “before and after” photos of your nails and use them as a motivation
to keep struggling with your habit. Recognizing that it usually takes three weeks to grow nails half a centimeter,
chart out in the book how long you want your nails to be by a certain date.

5. Add calcium and magnesium-rich foods to your ration in order to help your nails grow and repair faster. Did you know that one of the reasons you bite your nails is that your body might lack calcium and magnesium and tries to get these elements back into organism with your bitten and chewed nails.

7. Find a habit to replace the nail biting. Whenever you have the urge to bite, do that habit instead. Some people
like to drum their fingers, or just stare at their hands. Just make sure it’s not a bad habit; choose a helpful one or
one that doesn’t really matter either way.

8.  Cover your nails with a nail polish. For females, fit artificial nails. They can really help. For guys, polish them and apply some shine/growth promoter or petroleum jelly. This may not end your habit but you’ll feel harder to bite nails that are looking so cool!

9. Cut your nails back. Keep clippers with you at all times. You can’t bite if your nails are too short!

10. Speak to your family about your nails – this will help to focus your mind on your goals. Ask for help from your partner(s). Keep talking about your goals.

11. If your nails improve and you keep on preventing yourself from biting nails, show your improved nails to your partners or family members – this will significantly help you to keep eliminating this habit once and for all.

12.  Do a manicure, and chat with the manicurist about having great looking nails.

13. Keep looking after your nails, with cuticle oil, shine and growth promoter, and no biting! Take care of your nails and this will eventually replace your biting habit!
